the reason you render tallow from fat is to keep it from spoiling. almost any fat will do, if it is rendered? skillfully. -dale

Rendered fat from any red meat (Beef, deer and moose) is called tallow. Rendered fat from any white meat (Pork or foul) is called lard. Tallow has a higher melting temperature than lard. Both have the same properties,? both can be burned in a lamp, both can be used to cook with, both protect metal and waterproof and nourish leather and wood but lard makes a heck of a mess in your pack if it gets warm enough to liquify.

Yes it would. Except that he's not in grizzly country, those? are found in the utmost north part of the rockies. northern yellowstone and up. In reality, a primitive survivalist wouldn't go to grizzly bear country unless they have a very very big gun. The reason bear country laws are so strict is that the grizzly can smell all food on you. This fat yes but, dry frozen food you carry as well. The packaging won't save you, it will diminish but not negate smell.

So basicly, if? a bear is close enough for you to know about it, he can smell your mountain house beef stew, don't kid yourself thinking otherwise.

the point is utilizing your resources in the wild, but cotton balls would work great, cotton balls covered in petroleum jelly make starting a fire nothin- burns? a big bright flame for up to 5 minutes

Did the surface of the tallow ever catch fire? When I play with lamps is seems that as the oils heat up the? whole surface lights. But I've not used anything like the rock to fill a dish. Very cool. I'll be saving all of that old bacon grease from now on.
